Student Art Exchange

Please save for your reference.

Follow the guidelines below to complete your Classroom Connections: Student Art Exchange.

(Also: See our Tips for a Great Exchange and Collaboration Tools and Resources for Teachers in the right hand column.)

1. OneWorld Classrooms staff will match you by grade level with a partner class/school in the world region of your choice and give you the contact information for a Partner Teacher or Project Liaison at your partner school.

NOTE: You will communicate with your partner teacher in English (unless you indicate(ed) another language when registering).

2. Contact your partner teacher via E-mail prior to the exchange to determine exchange timing*, artistic media, themes, curricular connections, and whether or not you will include/attach student photos.

TIMESAVER: Click here to use our sample introductory E-mail and checklist. [USE THE BACK BUTTON TO RETURN]

*IMPORTANT: You are responsible for determining with your partner a specific date when you will mail artwork to each other. Please make every effort to complete the exchange during the timeframe you arrange. Keep in mind that packages via regular mail may take from one to three weeks to arrive.

3. Send 30 pieces of student-created artwork to your partner teacher via first class regular mail (airmail).

4. Send original student artwork -- using any media -- that accurately reflects aspects of your students' lives/cultures. Students should produce colorful and artistic work. If possible, please have students color in all white spaces on the page.

TIP: Encourage your students to do their very best work, since their artwork may be displayed and will be a window through which others will learn about them and their culture. If you are a classroom teacher, consider involving your Art teacher or an Artist in Residence.

5. To give your partners a broader view of your students' lives/cultures, encourage students to avoid repetition of subjects. To ensure variety, you may wish to discuss and even assign different subjects. (You may arrange with your partner teacher via E-mail to focus on a more specific theme, such as clothing, sports, food, home life, etc., if you wish.)

6.Submit artwork on paper of the following sizes:

International size: A4, A3 or in-between
North American size: 8.5 x 11 inches, 11 x 17 inches or in-between

(Larger sizes are acceptable, but will require additional postage.)

7.Have students attach personal information labels to the backs of their artwork with paperclips. Students may also include additional information about their artwork or themselves.

You may use the labels available following the links below or make your own.

HTML -- English | Spanish
Microsoft Word --
English | Spanish

[USE THE BACK BUTTON TO RETURN FROM THE LABELS]

8. Optionally, you may also attach small student photos to each piece of artwork in the same way. Write the student's name on the back of the photo. Alternatively, you may send digital photos of your students on a CD. If you do, number the labels (and art, if applicable) and the photos so they match.

Arrange this with your partner teacher in advance.

TIP: If you attach labels/photos with a paperclip, your partners will be able to detach and display them with the corresponding artwork.

TIP: If possible, take photos of your students holding their artwork.

9. Check all student work for appropriate content (for more on this, see our Terms of Use).

10. When mailing your artwork, please include a cover letter or note indicating the teacher's name, grade level, school, city, state/province and country -- and any information that will help explain the artwork you are sending.

Optional: You may also send additional photos of your students and your school, town or environment with your package. Arrange this with your partner teacher prior to the exchange.

11. Upon receipt of the artwork from your partner, send your partner teacher an E-mail to confirm that you have received the package, to say 'thank you,' and to formally conclude the exchange.

12. If you have any problems communicating via E-mail with your partner teacher -- or if the exchange is not proceeding in the timeframe agreed upon, please send an E-mail to paul@oneworldclassrooms.org.

TIPS FOR A GREAT EXCHANGE

  • Teachers are busy people! Where possible, recruit a parent or two to help coordinate the exchange.
  • Art is a powerful way for your students to share who they are, teach about their culture -- and make friends. Encourage them to do their best!
  • Where possible, involve your Art teacher -- or an Artist in Residence, to empower your students to create artwork they will be proud to share.
  • For a more meaningful exchange, include student photos, attached to the artwork.
  • Consider IM-ing (instead of E-mailing) your partner teacher. See the Instant Messaging Tool links below and suggest this to your partner teacher in your initial E-mail.
  • Communicate with your partner teacher via E-mail before, during and after your exchange: before, to work out exchange timing and details; during, to stay on the same page; and after, to confirm that all materials have been sent and received -- and to say 'thank you.'
